    • Through readings, lectures and discussions, each member of this course is expected to significantly increase her/his nuanced understanding of a genealogy of the arts as a modern idea and a sphere of human imagination in practice. Special attention is given to a range of theoretical issues arisen amidst defining moments of the formation and transformation of such an idea in practice, at once engendered and mediated through variable modes of creative articulations, fields of knowledge production and institutional configurations or innovations of given societies.
      Providing a foundational introduction to the canonical propositions and their contestations on the arts and art history of modern times, this course is also designed for students to define and explore her/his own questions on contemporary arts, culture and society, as bound up with shifting conditions of the life-worlds with paradigmatic implications for human thought and forms of imagination, while developing her/his own theoretical approaches and working vocabulary.
      Each students are expected to give a presentation of preferred artist by the end of the course, including their understanding of the style, resonance. An art work is required to show the student’s ability of present his/her understanding of the artist.
    • Course Syllabus:
    • After completing the course, students should:
      1. Have a general understanding of the Western art history
      2. Be able to identify masterpieces
      3. Learn basic aesthetics
      4. Present their ability to learn from masters
