    • The purpose of this course is to cultivate students' engineering consciousness and ability. Both knowledge imparting and practical operation are carried out to enhance students’ capability of engineering problem analyzing and solving. This course consists of two parts: taught lectures and practical classes. The taught lectures cover the fundamental engineering concepts and graphical languages, the relationships between engineering and science, the knowledge on the basic requirements of an engineer, communication skills, the fundamental knowledge of engineering, engineering design and manufacturing, as well as engineering project cases. In the practical classes, two impromptu design projects and a comprehensive course project are carried out to enhance the students’ consciousness of engineering, problem analyzing and solving ability and the capability of innovation.
    • Course Syllabus:
    • After completing the course, students should:

      1. Understand the importance of engineering in the human society, and the difference and relationship between engineering and science.
      2. Have an initial grasp of the fundamental concepts and principles of engineering, especially in relation to materials engineering.
      3. Be able to apply engineering concepts, principles and knowledge to analyze and solve practical problems;
      Have written and oral communication ability, as well as the management capability in teamwork.
      4. Be able to use computers and several mathematic or statistic software to model and analyze simple practical problems.
      5. Exhibit good moral quality of honesty and integrity as future engineering professionals.
