    • This course introduces the basic elements and functionalities of intelligent transportation systems (ITS) and how they are designed, deployed and operated for various traffic and transportation management purposes. Main topics covered by this course include transportation systems management and analysis, historical development, functional areas and institutional issues of ITS, advanced traffic management systems, advanced traveler information systems, advanced vehicle control systems, advanced public transportation systems, commercial vehicle operations, and role of ITS in travel demand management. Other topics of interest might be introduced and guest lectures be presented if time allows. The focus of this course is on the technological, systems and institutional aspects of ITS and its subsystems. To make the course self-contained, relevant transportation systems analysis methods will be covered, and elaborated if necessary.

    • Profile
    • Dr. Chi Xie is currently a Professor in the Department of Transportation, Shipping and Logistics, the School of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Civil Engineering. He holds a B.Eng., M.Eng., M.S., and Ph.D., all in Civil Engineering, from Tsinghua University, National University of Singapore, University of Massachusetts, and Cornell University, respectively.

      Dr. Xie's research interests span various topics in the general transportation and logistics field, including transportation network analysis and control, transportation emergency and risk management, travel demand analysis and forecasting, and intelligent transportation systems. His research has been sponsored by the U.S. National Science Foundation, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Doctoral Fund of the Ministry of Education of China, and the China Recruitment Program of Global Experts. His research results appeared in over 30 peer-reviewed publications on top-notch transportation and logistics journals.
